While working off duty but in uniform, Officer Jared Reston was notified by mall employees that they planned to confront two suspected shoplifters. The suspects resisted the mall security and Officer Reston, along with another officer working off duty, intervened. One of the suspects was restrained by the second one ran out of the mall and into the parking lot with Officer Reston chasing behind him. The suspect pulled a gun and began firing at Officer Reston. He fired 12 shots with 6 shots striking Officer Reston – three times in the chest and another three striking him in the face, hip and thigh. Officer Reston was thrown to the ground and the shooter stood over him continuing to shoot. Officer Reston was able to return fire, killing the suspect.
