Corporal Chris Young, a five year veteran of the force, initiated a traffic stop around 4:15 Thursday morning on Route 61 heading out of town towards Montgomery.
“Things happened pretty quick,” said Oak Hill Police Chief Mike Whisman. “Instead of pulling off the side of the road, the vehicle stopped in the lane abruptly. The suspect exited the vehicle with a handgun and exchanged fire Corporal Young.”
The suspect fired at least two shots. One hit the door of Young’s cruiser. The second shot hit young in the upper abdomen. Young’s life was spared because he was wearing his bullet proof vest.
