On December 17, 2017, officers from the Bremerton Police Department
responded to a call in a parking lot where a man suspected of violating a
Protection from Abuse Court Order was in a truck. As the officers approached
the vehicle, the suspect immediately opened fire with a 9mm handgun and
struck both officers.
Thanks to their training and gear, officers were able to return fire and fatally
wounded the assailant.
Both officers were rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that Officer
Kent Mayfield’s ABA® XT03 level IIIA armor stopped the round to his
abdomen. He and his partner were both treated for hits off the armor and both
are back to full duty.
