On December 14, 2017, Sergeant Bryan Spieler and Officer Katherine Weiss
of the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department were dispatched to a call
regarding a suspicious person possibly linked to a ‘shots fired’ call from the
day prior.
As they attempted to take the suspect into custody, he resisted arrest, and
Officer Weiss deployed her Taser® weapon. However, the Taser weapon
deployment was unsuccessful, and the suspect pulled out a 9mm semiautomatic
handgun and shot both officers in the torso.
Officer Weiss was able to return fire as the suspect, who was still firing at the
officers, fled to his residence a short distance away. A 7-hour standoff
ensued, and the St. Louis County Tactical Unit finally took the suspect into
custody.
Sergeant Spieler was wearing an ABA® XT03 level II armor while Officer Weiss
had a Second Chance® SM01.1 level II armor on. Both vests stopped the 9mm
rounds and the officers were treated and released.
We welcome Sergeant Bryan Spieler, SAVE #2033, and Officer Katherine
Weiss, SAVE #2034, to The Safariland Group SAVES CLUB®.
