On September 19, 2018 Deputy Joel Garnica was responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call. Deputy Garnica located the suspect vehicle and was coordinating the stop. The suspect drove through Salazar Park in East Los Angeles. The suspect then exited his vehicle and opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputy Garnica was hit in the face and chest. His Safariland MR01 IIA armor stopped the round to his chest. Other deputies were able to return fire and end the threat.
