On January 26, 2021, Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a warrant service for a suspect wanted on multiple felony warrants. The warrants included ‘Felon in Possession of a Firearm’ from an incident that occurred the previous day. The suspect was eventually located on a street near his residence. As Deputies Barragan and Miller made contact, the suspect turned and opened fire with a 9mm handgun. Deputy Barragan was hit multiple times including in both hands, his face, and his back. Deputy Barragan’s Safariland® SX® SX02 Level IIIA ballistic panel stopped the 9mm round that hit his back. Deputy Miller returned fire causing the suspect to flee. Deputy Miller called in the shooting and began buddy-aid while applying tourniquets to Deputy Barragan. A perimeter was set up and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
Deputy Barragan is still recovering from the wounds sustained off the armor and is in physical therapy for the wounds to his hands. He hopes to return to full duty soon.
