On August 9, 2020 Deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic situation at an apartment complex. School Resource Officer Kevin O’Dell was attempting to handcuff a suspect when the struggle went to the ground. The suspect produced a .38 pistol from his waistband and shot both deputies. Deputy O’Dell was shot twice in the leg and once with a contact shot on his right chest. Deputy O’Dell’s Safariland® MR01 Level IIIA armor stopped the round to his chest. The second deputy was hit in the arm. Deputies were able to stay in the gunfight and the suspect was wounded and taken into custody. He has since been charged with the attempted murder of the 2 deputies. Both Deputies were awarded the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association Medal of Valor for their actions.
Deputy O’Dell was 12 days away from retirement when the incident took place. He has since recovered and retired.
We welcome Deputy Kevin O’Dell, SAVE #2113, to The Safariland Group SAVES CLUB.
