On July 2, 2012, members of the Surprise Police Department’s tactical team were serving a search warrant at a local residence. After knocking, announcing and breaching the door, a suspect inside opened fire on the officers as the team made entry. Officer Mark Filler was the shield operator and point man, and was able to utilize the PROTECH® Defender Shield to provide cover.
The Defender shield was struck twice – once in the viewport and once several inches below the viewport on the main body of the shield. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the assailant. No officers or other suspects were injured in the incident.
