On March 29, 2024, Officer Anthony Huizar of the Sparks Police Department was conducting a traffic stop. As he approached the vehicle, the suspect opened fire with a .40 S&W caliber semi-automatic handgun through the closed window, Officer Huizar was hit twice. One round grazed his neck, and the second round hit his Safariland® Hardwire™ .68 level IIIA armor worn in a Bothell 2.0 carrier. The suspect fled after shooting Officer Huizar and broke into several residences eventually taking a hostage. The hostage was rescued during the standoff. The suspect continued to fire on several officers during the event and officers returned fire. The suspect was eventually found deceased in the residence after a barricaded suspect standoff. Officer Huizar was treated and released from the hospital and has returned to full duty.
