On April 20th, 2023, a suspect ambushed and killed an Ada County Deputy during a traffic stop. The suspect fled and was ultimately located by drones in the back yard of a 4-plex apartment building. Additional drones were able to confirm the suspect was still armed with a handgun in his right hand and was again positioned to ambush approaching officers.
An innocent bystander from a nearby apartment unwittingly began to approach the suspect. Drones and LRAD announcements were successful in redirecting the innocent back into his apartment, but not before the suspect realized his presence. The suspect moved toward that apartment and began attempting to make entry through the rear sliding door.
Operators from the Boise Police Department Special Operations Unit were forced to move on the suspect to prevent a hostage situation. Sgt. Joseph Andreoli grabbed the Safariland® PROTECH® Entry II X 3P Shield that was staged nearby and led the team to the suspects last known location. As the team approached, the suspect secreted himself behind a wooden yard divider in another attempt to ambush the officers. The suspect saw the team approaching and opened fire with a 10mm semiautomatic handgun. The round was stopped by the Safariland® PROTECH® Entry II shield and Officer Josh Sontag, who was directly behind Sgt. Andreoli, returned fire ending the threat.
We welcome Sergeant Joseph Andreoli as Save #2229 to The Safariland Group Saves Club®.
