On March 8th, 2024, 2nd Lieutenant Bobby Johnson of the Memphis Police Department stopped a vehicle for speeding on I-240. 2nd Lt. Johnson was issuing the citation, but the driver refused to sign and instead opened fire with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun. 2nd Lt. Johnson was hit multiple times including rounds to his left hand, left thigh, left buttock, his Safariland® radio holder and his Safariland® XTREME® XT03 Level II armor worn in an M2 carrier. 2nd Lt. Johnson returned fire, and the suspect fled the scene. The suspect was located at his home a few hours later where he was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. 2nd Lieutenant Johnson was transported to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He has recovered and returned to full duty.
