On September 3rd, 2024, Officers from the Phoenix Police Department responded to a report of a burglary. The suspect was located in a nearby backyard, and officers gave chase as he fled. During the foot pursuit, the suspect turned and opened fire with a 45 ACP semiautomatic handgun. Both pursuing officers were hit. Officer Zane Coolidge was fatally wounded by a round to his neck. Officer Matthew Haney was hit in the left side of his Safariland® Hardwire® Level IIIA armor less than an inch from the edge. Officer Haney returned fire and then began rendering aid to Officer Coolidge. Officer Haney was treated and released from the hospital and has returned to full duty.
The suspect was apprehended and has been charged with multiple felonies.
