On March 2, 2014, Officer Garret Osilka conducted a traffic stop in Loveland, Colorado. As he approached the vehicle, the driver shot him in the center of his chest from approximately two feet away with a 12-gauge shotgun. Officer Osilka then returned fire but the suspect fled the scene.
As the suspect took flight, Officer Osilka radioed for medical assistance and broadcast a description of the suspect and his vehicle. The suspect was later captured and has been charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer.
As for Officer Osilka, he was rushed to the hospital and medical personnel discovered that his Second Chance® Summit™ SM01 level IIIA and IMPAC™ HT plate had stopped the shotgun blast. Although the officer suffered from blunt force trauma and a collapsed lung, Officer Osilka is home recovering with his family.
