On May 8, 2008, Sgt. Keith Volm conducted a traffic stop on a gang member wanted on a parole violation. Unbeknownst to Sgt. Volm, the suspect had just carjacked the vehicle and was robbing the driver. As Sgt. Volm exited his patrol vehicle, the suspect opened fire with two fully loaded 9mm pistols firing 28 rounds through the rear window of the suspect vehicle.
Several rounds struck Sgt. Volm’s patrol vehicle, including one round that hit the windshield, fragmented and hit Sgt. Volm in the upper left chest and left side of his head. Though wounded, Sgt. Volm stayed in the fight and returned fire.
The suspect was hit five times and survived. He later pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder of a police officer and is serving a sentence of
35 years to life. Sgt. Volm’s ABA® Xtreme® Level IIIA armor stopped the
round that hit his chest and he was treated for the fragment that hit his temple. He has returned to full duty.
We welcome Sgt. Keith Volm, SAVE# 1937 to The Safariland Group SAVES CLUB®.
