Chief Deputy Brent Harrison

Castro County Sheriff's Office - Texas Saves Club

On May 8, 2025, Chief Deputy Brent Harrison was responding to a criminal trespass call where the caller had a suspect at gunpoint. While enroute to the scene, the caller reported that the suspect had fled on a bike. Chief Deputy located the suspect near the parsonage behind a nearby church. The suspect was using a hose in a fenced-in area. Chief Deputy Harrison instructed the man to place his hands on the wall while he attempted to search him for weapons. The suspect failed to comply and pulled a 9mm and shot Chief Deputy Harrison with a contact shot in the center of his chest. The assailant then struck the Chief Deputy in the head with the firearm, and a struggle for the firearm ensued. The assailant attempted to shoot the Chief Deputy again, but the firearm did not fire.

At this point, a running gunfight began with the Chief Deputy exchanging fire with the assailant. The assailant fired at least 3 more rounds, and the Chief Deputy used cover to do a tactical reload. When the assailant moved to cross an open area, Chief Deputy Harrison again returned fire, and the assailant fell to the ground. As Chief Deputy Harrison moved to handcuff the assailant, the suspect reached for his waistband, where he had 2 pistols. Chief Deputy Harrison kicked them away and secured the assailant.

Backup arrived, and Chief Deputy Harrison and the assailant were transported to separate hospitals. The Chief Deputy was checked, and it was discovered that his Safariland® Level IIIA SX02 armor, worn in a U1 Uniform Shirt Carrier, stopped the 9mm round to his chest. He was treated and released. The assailant succumbed to his injuries.
