I am a millennial. I grew up playing video games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), and watching shows like Future Weapons. The FN SCAR was one of the most iconic firearms of that era. It’s an icon, really.
However, in 2025, FN announced the discontinuation of the SCAR platform. While many people disliked that announcement, I think just as many expected an updated version to be on the horizon. Well, that idea proved correct, as FN has just announced the next-generation SCAR.

FEATURES
Since 2008, the SCAR has built its reputation through hard use, and this next generation feels like FN finally sat down with the rifle and listened—really listened—to what people wanted. The iconic silhouette remains, but underneath are over two dozen significant upgrades aimed directly at the shooter.
At the core of the update is a lighter, hydraulically buffered two-piece bolt carrier that functions as a built-in shock absorber, reducing felt recoil, increasing follow-up shot speed, and making the rifle noticeably more comfortable to shoot.
The trigger was upgraded with an improved single-stage trigger on carbine models and a new two-stage trigger on the SCAR 20S. Other adaptability features include true AR pistol grip compatibility, three customizable selector levers with 16 possible combinations, multiple stock options, user-changeable barrels, improved sling mounts, and Torx head fasteners.
Suppressor capability is now a key feature, with updated 1/2×28 and 5/8×24 muzzle threads designed for forward-venting suppressors like the new FN QD556 and FN QD762.
An extended receiver, integrated M-LOK rail at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, AR pistol grip compatibility, user-changeable barrels, and improved sling mounts all highlight the SCAR’s modular DNA. Add a chrome-lined, cold hammer-forged barrel, an updated short-stroke gas piston with a two-position regulator, 16,000-round durability testing, and support for multiple calibers and configurations, and this SCAR doesn’t reinvent itself; it evolves.
ZOOMING OUT
The next-generation SCAR builds on its history and introduces a range of new features to improve the shooting experience. The biggest upgrade is the ability to run suppressed — something that previously voided the warranty — with flow-through-style suppressors. The redesigned bolt and the platform’s overall modularity make it an appealing choice for anyone looking for a “do-it-all rifle.”
