On January 30th, 2026, Officer Johangel Lorenzo of the New Bedford Police Department was assisting with traffic control at the scene of an accident. Officer Lorenzo was seated in his patrol vehicle when a driver moving at a high rate of speed crashed into several cars, including his patrol car.
Officer Lorenzo’s Safariland® SX02 Level II armor worn in an EXT® AWS Carrier prevented any injuries to his torso. He crawled out of the passenger side of his patrol unit and provided aid to those injured in the collision before being hospitalized himself.
Officer Lorenzo has since recovered and returned to full duty.
