On October 23, 2012 deputies were dispatched to assist in locating a suspect wanted on an aggravated assault broadcast from earlier that evening. As the deputies approached the residence the suspect came out from the side of the house and began running. The deputies pursued and the suspect turned and opened fire. The assailant was armed with a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and fired 11 rounds, striking Deputy Michael Roth and Deputy Brad Childers.
Deputy Roth was hit in the chest once, which was stopped by his Safariland® Silver 6.0 Level II vest and twice in the arm out- side the vest. Deputy Childers was also hit in the chest and the round was stopped by his Second Chance® Monarch® MR01 Level II vest.
Deputies returned fire wounding the assailant who took cover in a nearby garage. SWAT was called and the suspect was taken into custody. Deputy Childers is back to work and Deputy Roth hopes to return as soon as his arm heals.
We welcome Deputy Michael Roth as Save #1827 and Deputy Brad Childers as Save #1828 to the Safariland SAVES Club.
