On June 30, 2013, Officer David Giosa of the Myrtle Beach Police Department was working a single-vehicle accident on the U.S. 17 Bypass. Officer Giosa’s patrol vehicle was on the highway with its emergency lights activated, and he was standing in a grassy area on the side of the road investigating the accident when a vehicle went around his patrol vehicle and struck him at 45 mph. He was first propelled onto the windshield of the suspect vehicle, then thrown off where he travelled 30 feet before he hit a guardrail.
He suffered injuries to his head and legs including a severely broken ankle but his doctor credits his ABA® FC01 armor with protecting his torso during the crash writing, “I think he is most fortunate to have been on duty with a vest. The bulletproof vest saved him major abdominal and chest trauma.” The driver was charged with a DUI and Officer Giosa is hoping to return to full duty next month.
