On May 24, 2017, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were conducting a traffic stop in the Compton area when Deputy Edward Gonsalves opened the rear door of the suspect’s vehicle to detain a passenger. Upon opening the door, the rear seat passenger opened fire and shot Deputy Gonsalves once in the chest and once in the arm with a .38 caliber weapon.
Immediately, Deputy Gonsalves and his partner returned fire and eliminated the threat. Deputy Gonsalves was then taken to the hospital where they discovered that his Second Chance® MN01 Level IIA Armor stopped the round to his chest.
