Yannis was called to investigate a shooting behind a residence, at 7:40 p.m. June 9, 1974. While approaching the area where Yannis heard the shooting, two .22 caliber bullets struck the officer in the right arm and chest area. Not knowing whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, Yannis made his way back to his car and called for backup assistance. He then returned to the scene and apprehended the assailant who had been drinking and shooting randomly into a tree line where Yannis had been shot. On arrival of the backup until Yannis was given first aid for his lacerated arm. Closer examination found a partially penetrated slug dead center in his Second Chance® vest.
