As in all “saves” from high power rifle fire on “soft” body armor we must qualify the circumstances under which this incident occurred. Officer Maloney stopped a vehicle on a tail light violation. Before Maloney could react, the assailant exited his vehicle with a .30-06 rifle, firing at the officer. A bullet struck the windshield on the police unit, causing the bullet to disintegrate. A large part of the lead bullet struck Officer Maloney in the chest only to be stopped by his Second Chance® vest. Maloney returned fire, hitting his assailant in the right knee, right elbow, right shoulder and right chest area.
