During the high-speed pursuit of a motorcyclist, the biker went into a skid and slid off his bike. Not wanting to run over the biker, Ackers jammed on his brakes and went into a skid himself. The patrol car went over a curb and into the front of a building. The sudden stop threw Ackers into the wheel and column. The “bulletproof (Second Chance®) vest worn by this officer,” writes Dr. Home, “caused him to survive a serious accident without significant trauma to the chest or abdomen.”
