Miles and another Hallendale officer responded separately to a silent alarm at a local bank. One of the robbers, inside the bank, was dressed as a security guard and took the first responding officer hostage as he entered the bank. Miles, pulling up in front of the bank at the time was confronted by the bogus guard at gunpoint and a struggle ensued. Miles took a hit from a .38 slug in his stomach, protected by his concealed Second Chance® armor. Miles was able to return fire with his own weapon. In the exchange of gunfire one of the robbers was killed, one surrendered while the third escaped capture.
