Officer Degner was on his way to work when another vehicle pulled out in front of him. The impact resulted in a fractured sternum caused by the steering column. His attending physician, Dr. Pontani, stated that “Degner’s chest would have been crushed had it not been for the protective vest, resulting in instant death.”
