SSG Mallette responded to a domestic assault call at a barracks on the Army base. On arrival, Mallette saw a male civilian beating his enlisted wife about the head. He stopped his vehicle and ordered the man to stop the assault. The man turned and ran toward Mallette producing a .25 caliber handgun. At about ten feet from Mallette the man fired the weapon striking Mallette in the chest. As the MP turned to seek cover, he was struck again in the back. Mallette was wearing his Second Chance® Model Y2A armor at the time of the assault, which deterred both bullets from penetrating his torso. After a brief time trying to talk his assailant into surrendering, the man turned the weapon on himself committing suicide.
