On December 29, 2004 Deputy Bergstrom responded to a distrubance call regarding a 29-year-old methamphetamine addict. The suspect was experiencing paranoid episodes and was convinced by Deputy Bergstrom and a second deputy to go to the hospital with them to seek help. While Bergstrom was handcuffing the suspect he was shoved into the push bar of his patrol car. There was a sharp piece of angle iron on the push bar and it cut through Bergstrom’s shirt and vest cover and tore 1 1/2 inches off the vest. Because the vest protected Deputy Bergstrom he was able to assist the seccond deputy in arresting the violent suspect and taking him to jail.
