Deputy Bates was dispatched to the beach where a vintage WW II incendiary bomb had been found. A fireman hit the bomb with a fire axe causing it to detonate. Although Deputy Bates was severely injured and was burned by phosphorous, he received no injuries in the area of his body protected by his vest.
