The Mossberg 590 is a staple of law enforcement and military circles worldwide. The 590 is an overbuilt but otherwise a traditional pump action shotgun, but the new Mossberg 590R and 590RM is a not-so-subtle tweak on the pump gun formula with MBUS backup sights, an improved trigger, telescoping buttstock, and an AR-like rotary safety.
The Mossberg 590R takes the conventional tubular magazine 590 to its most flexible configuration. It is a 12 gauge shotgun with a 3-inch chamber and an 18.5-inch barrel. Instead of the standard bead sight, the 590R comes with Magpul MBUS sights and a Picatinny rail for an optic. Instead of the standard cylinder bore barrel, the 590R uses an AccuChoke-compatible barrel with a cylinder choke tube included. A removable aluminum head shield rides over the barrel.
Other features include a Magpul MOE+ pistol grip and a five-position Magpul buttstock with an interchangeable recoil pad. The shotgun has double-sided QD cup mounts for flexible slinging options. The barrel band wears an M-Lok adapter for mounting a weapon light. One of the more distinctive features is the ambidextrous rotary safety in lieu of a tang-mounted safety, which lends itself well to those with the AR platform in their muscle memory.
The 590RM is an updated version of the 590M first released in 2018. It shares all of these same features as the new 590R, but instead of the conventional 6+1 tubular magazine, it takes detachable box magazines with capacities ranging from 5 to 20 rounds. Both the 590R and 590RM come with either a standard heavy barrel or respective models with a breaching muzzle device that is set up for tactical entry. These new additions to the venerable 590 series are shipping now and have a starting MSRP of $1,085.
