Dark Angel Medical: D.A.R.K. “Blue Line” Trauma Kit

Eugene Nielsen

Whether on the street or in the field, gear selection always comes down to one thing: capability versus carry. Every inch of belt space is contested, and every ounce carried must justify itself. Dark Angel Medical, long respected for its streamlined, no‑nonsense medical systems, designed the D.A.R.K. “Blue Line” Trauma Kit to meet the needs of professionals who require essential trauma tools without the bulk of a traditional IFAK.

Rather than replacing a full trauma kit, the D.A.R.K. Blue Line Trauma Kit fills a specific niche: providing bleeding‑control and chest‑injury essentials in a package slim enough to disappear into a cargo pocket. For officers who already carry a tourniquet on their belt, vest, or holster, the Blue Line Kit offers a way to expand capability without adding weight or clutter. The concept behind the Blue Line Kit is best summed up by the motto of Dark Angel Medical: “Simplicity Under Stress.”

I was provided this kit at no cost for evaluation, but the thoughts here are entirely my own.

Design Philosophy

The D.A.R.K. Blue Line Trauma Kit is designed to deliver essential trauma capability in the smallest practical footprint. At 4.5″ W × 6″ L × 0.5″ D and weighing just 9 ounces, it is among the thinnest trauma kits on the market that still includes hemostatic gauze and chest seals. Its compact form factor makes it ideal for cargo pockets or bags.

Its low‑profile footprint is one of its greatest strengths. The kit’s updated laminate pouch, manufactured in the USA, further enhances its utility. The material is rigid enough to protect contents and maintain structure, yet slim enough to minimize printing through clothing. Unlike soft nylon pouches that collapse when empty, the laminate pouch enhances functionality,

The minimalist design does introduce inherent limitations. The tight footprint leaves little room for customization or additional tools. Users who prefer to carry airway adjuncts, shears, or supplemental bandages may find the D.A.R.K. Blue Line Trauma Kit too restrictive unless paired with additional equipment. This trade-off is simply part of its low‑profile, purpose‑built approach.

Contents

The D.A.R.K. Blue Line Trauma Kit features a tear‑open, vacuum‑sealed insert that protects the components while enabling rapid access during high‑stress events. Its contents are selected to address two of the primary preventable causes of death in prehospital trauma: massive hemorrhage and tension pneumothorax.

QuikClot Combat Gauze LE is a cornerstone of modern hemorrhage control. This kaolin‑impregnated hemostatic gauze is widely used in military, law‑enforcement, and EMS settings for the management of life‑threatening bleeding when direct pressure alone is insufficient or when a tourniquet cannot be applied. By accelerating the body’s natural clotting cascade, it significantly enhances the hemorrhage‑control capability of a compact trauma kit.

HyFin Vent Compact Chest Seals are designed for the treatment of open chest wounds, helping prevent the development of tension pneumothorax by allowing air to escape while minimizing re‑entry. Their compact profile allows them to fit within the kit’s slim footprint without compromising performance. Including a full pair ensures the responder can treat both entry and exit wounds, which is essential in penetrating trauma.

The mini compression bandage provides sustained, targeted pressure to maintain hemostasis after wound packing or to secure other dressings. Despite its reduced size, it remains fully functional for extremity and junctional bleeding control, making it well‑suited for a kit designed around portability and rapid deployment.

Nitrile Gloves & Mylar Emergency Blanket: Nitrile (latex‑free) gloves support responder safety and reduce contamination risk during patient contact. The Mylar emergency blanket helps mitigate trauma‑induced hypothermia—an important consideration, as even mild reductions in core temperature can worsen coagulopathy and increase bleeding. Together, these items complete the kit’s readiness for real‑world prehospital trauma scenarios.

Tourniquet Pairing

One of the kit’s intentional trade-offs is the absence of a tourniquet. Keeping the footprint pocket‑sized requires omitting bulkier components, which means a tourniquet must be carried separately. For most officers and responders, this is already standard practice, and the Blue Line Kit is designed to complement, not replace, tourniquet carry.

Dark Angel Medical recommends pairing the kit with a C‑A‑T Gen 7 or SOF Tourniquet Gen 5, both of which are CoTCCC‑recommended.

The Safariland Tourniquet System

Many agencies are moving toward dedicated tourniquet carriers to ensure consistent placement and rapid access. Among these options, the Safariland Tourniquet System has gained traction for its seamless integration with Safariland holster platforms. It pairs especially well with the C‑A‑T, the most widely fielded and recognized tourniquet in military and first‑responder use. The system’s form factor aligns most naturally with the C‑A‑T, making it the most secure and reliable fit in real‑world use.

The Safariland system mounts a tourniquet in a rigid, open‑top carrier that shields it from abrasion and environmental damage while keeping it immediately accessible. The carrier can be attached directly to a duty belt, integrated onto a holster platform, or secured to PALS/MOLLE webbing through compatible adapters, giving users flexibility in how they stage their primary medical tool across different loadouts.

While Safariland offers a variety of additional mounting options, mounting a tourniquet directly to a holster setup is a practical modification that can improve response time in a critical incident. Keeping lifesaving medical equipment in a consistent, easily accessible location ensures it’s available when seconds matter.

When paired with the Blue Line Kit, the system forms a balanced and efficient trauma‑response setup. The tourniquet remains fixed on the belt or holster for rapid deployment, while the remaining medical essentials ride flat in a pocket where they stay protected and out of the way. Dividing the equipment this way reduces belt overcrowding, improves mobility, and keeps critical items indexed in predictable locations.

Training is Essential

Having the necessary tools is only part of the equation. Equipment is only as good as your training. Basic emergency medical training should cover the entire spectrum of lifesaving skills. And like shooting, they’re perishable skills. We all know the importance of regular firearms training, but medical training is all too often neglected. You are more likely to need to use medical skills than you are your firearm.

Dark Angel Medical offers an exceptional two‑day Direct Action Response Training (D.A.R.T.) course at locations across the country. The program provides all participants with Bleeding Control (BCON) certification through the American College of Surgeons. It also provides 16 hours of CEUs, approved by CECBEMS, to NREMT EMT-Basics/Advanced and Paramedics. I have taken the D.A.R.T. course and highly recommend it. Regardless of your current skill level, you’ll walk away with practical, confidence‑building medical skills and a much deeper understanding of how to respond effectively.
