Sig P365 XMACRO – A Duty Gun?

Travis Pike

The SIG P365 family has grown dramatically in the last six years. If you mention SIG P365, you need to clarify which one. What started as a concealed carry pistol has evolved into an entire lineup of guns suitable for nearly any defensive, competitive, or duty purpose. The Sig P365 XMACRO is the big boy of the lineup that would cross a fairly large Venn Diagram if we broke down its use cases.

Is the XMACRO a duty gun? Are there duty holsters for it?

The challenge with the XMACRO is holster availability. Options are limited beyond concealed carry models. While the XMACRO excels as a concealed carry gun, it’s versatile enough for various roles that demand different holster types. Many police departments nationwide have adopted the P365 series for duty use—especially among plainclothes officers—but suitable holsters remain scarce. A purpose-built OWB holster lets you carry with confidence on duty, push hard on the range, or compete effectively.

Safariland is changing the market with the release of the XMACRO and FUSE 6360RDSO, a purpose-driven, modern OWB rig designed for discerning users.

Can the SIG XMACRO Be a Duty Carry Option?

The XMACRO represents an upsize in the micro-compact genre. It maintains the magazine geometry that allowed SIG to reach heights in capacity and efficiency, but ups the ante to a larger frame with larger magazines. The XMACRO is remarkably thin and light but packs a 3.7-inch or 3.1-inch barrel combined with a 17-round magazine.

A duty gun needs a duty holster.

The 3.1-inch and 3.7-inch versions are the same length, but the 3.1-inch version integrates ports that act as a compensator. This pushes gas upward, which pushes the gun down. This helps prevent muzzle rise. The 3.7-inch version gives us a port-free design free from the complications of using a compensated gun.

Both guns have broken the chains of being a micro-compact. Their size puts them into the same category as guns like the Glock 19. The Glock 19 has been a proven duty gun with Federal, local, and municipal police, as well as America’s best warfighters in elite special operations units. It falls into the compact realm of firearms, and compact firearms have long proven to be reliable and capable duty guns.

The new RDSO features either level 1 – 6390RDSO or level 3- 6360RDSO retention.

The 17-round magazines with options for capacities up to 21 rounds make it a stellar option for duty carry. The gun might be compact, but the capacity is full-size. The P365 series might not be the gun of the everyday beat cop or Non-Commissioned Officer, but it’s a great option for plainclothes police, detectives, and similar roles where a larger gun isn’t needed.

The presence of a standard Picatinny rail and options for optics put a bow on top of a firearm perfectly suited for duty use. Adding optics and lights creates further complications for holsters, but the 6360RDSO is designed to accommodate both.

Back to Training Season

Anyone who carries a firearm should be competent with that firearm, but also with the accessories that surround it. This includes holsters, lights, and optics. The 6360RDSO offers the same reliability, dependability, and retention that Safariland is known for, but it requires training for new holsters and rigs.

Training is always in season.

The 6360RDSO is durable and dependable enough to withstand extended use at the range. It can absorb countless holsters and reholsters as you train to draw, shoot, and win. Users can choose between Level 1 retention with the ALS or Level 3 with the ALS/SLS combination. This new model of RDSO will be the first open-top model available in a Level 3 Retention without any additional optic cover. Mastering the art of defeating these retention devices and drawing your handgun should be a core part of training.

Safariland designed the ALS and SLS systems to provide an innovative retention system that ensures your gun stays where you want. It’s not going to fall out as you run up and downrange, use cover, or get on your belly. In competitive environments, losing your gun is a disqualification, meaning you lose. Or in a real-life scenario, as on patrol, it could mean much more.

Mastering the draw is a critical skill for any shooting activity.

While these retention devices lock the gun in place, they are designed to be intuitive and easy to disengage while wearing the gun. From personal experience, you build muscle memory on how to manipulate the ALS and SLS quickly and efficiently.

The training you put in will start to feel rhythmic; your dance steps are down, forward, rear, and draw.

You’re pushing down the hood, flipping the hood forward, rearward on the ALS, and drawing the gun. It’s a tango you can learn quickly without worrying about your dance partner.

Duty Ready for Fall

The 6360RDSO for the XMACRO or FUSE provides you with a solid duty option. Life on the streets, whether in the United States or overseas, is never predictable. The ALS and SLS devices don’t just keep your XMACRO in place on the range; they keep it in place across the urban sprawl of big cities and the unpredictable terrain of rural America.

A good holster, an open range, and an XMACRO make for a good day.

It’s designed to keep your gun situated in your holster while doing everything from the mundane, like climbing out of a cruiser, to the more exciting foot chase. You can have confidence knowing your guns are there as you race through a field to save lives in a car accident. At the same time, you have the confidence knowing that your XMACRO will be there.

The proven retention methods prevent unauthorized access to your firearm and allow you to have complete confidence in your holster system, regardless of what happens in the field. The 6360RDSO is made from durable polymer material that’s weather-resistant, tear-resistant, and won’t deform or fail in the heat of the day or the cold of the night.

Your XMACRO will be precisely where you need it to be, when you need it to be there.

Complete Guide to Duty Holsters for the SIG XMACRO

Bueller, Bueller?

There are a lot of crickets here. There isn’t much in the way of duty holsters for the XMACRO/FUSE series, and that’s a mistake. The groundbreaking design has redefined what a duty gun can be. Embracing the XMACRO with an appropriate duty holster is an embrace of the future of duty firearms.

Finding duty-ready holsters for the XMACRO has been tough, til now.

The Safariland 6360RDSO is a groundbreaking duty holster for the XMACRO because it addresses the unique challenges the XMACRO presents to holster manufacturers. The smaller size can be difficult to adapt to a duty-style rig, and creating modern, useful retention devices for such a small gun can be a formidable challenge.

A duty holster is a must-have for a duty gun.

Scaling down the 6360RDSO to work with the XMACRO was a challenge worth overcoming. It’s broken new ground in what a duty gun can be, with a holster to match. Accommodating Level 3 and Level 1 retention devices, modern accessories, and the Safariland ecosystem of accessories gives you a duty holster that does everything you need it to do.

The XMACRO Vs. The Glock 19

We’ve already mentioned the Glock once in the framing of duty guns, but let’s directly compare the XMACRO and the Glock 19. Why? In its era, the Glock 19 was often considered the perfect size. It was small and lightweight enough to easily carry concealed, but also large and formidable for duty carry.

The Glock 19 is the classic compact handgun.

A lot of time has passed since that first generation of Glock 19 made waves. The XMACRO is doing the same thing in 2025 that the Glock 19 did in 1988. The XMACRO is small enough to be easily concealed but formidable for duty use. The big difference comes down to the lithe design of the XMACRO.

It’s considerably thinner than the Glock 19 while still offering 17 rounds of 9mm. That’s two more rounds than the Glock 19 with a stock 15-round magazine. Glock 19 has a slightly longer barrel, but the XMACRO embraces an optics-ready design that easily overcomes any kind of sight radius issues.

The Glock 19 has optics-ready variants, and both guns feature rails for lights and other accessories. The XMACRO can do everything the Glock 19 can do while being smaller. That’s not to say one is better than the other, but if the Glock 19 can be a do-it-all gun, so can the XMACRO.

A New Day

The XMACRO is carving its way into just about every genre of handgun use case. As such, there needs to be holsters for every option. With the 6360RDSO, the XMACRO enters into the duty realm with a holster deserving of its versatility.
