In 2001, the original Springfield Armory XD was introduced. For 25 years, the XD has been part of the Springfield lineup. I have extensive experience with the original model. It was my father’s first handgun—ever. I know it has some quirks, but one thing I’m sure of is that its longevity speaks for itself.
Springfield just introduced the optics-ready XD Mod 4; let’s dig in.

FEATURES
The Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP updates the long-standing XD platform with modern features designed to enhance control, optics compatibility, and daily usability. The core of the design is a factory-milled slide equipped with a plate-based OSP system, enabling shooters to mount many of today’s popular pistol optics.
The polymer frame features aggressive texturing at key contact points, while an undercut trigger guard and extended beavertail promote a higher hand position for better control. Deeply cut front and rear slide serrations ensure confident manipulation even in challenging conditions.
The pistol also features several passive safety features, a hallmark of the platform, such as a grip safety, a rear slide striker status indicator, and a tactile loaded chamber indicator that protrudes slightly when a round is present.

A flat-faced trigger ensures consistent performance, and a red fiber-optic front with a white-dot rear rounds out the main feature set. A MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail provides accessory attachment options, and the pistol comes with a 16-round stainless-steel magazine (though a 10-round option is available for restricted areas).
ZOOMING OUT
The XD is no longer Springfield’s flagship model—that spot now belongs to the Echelon. But instead of jettisoning it, Springfield has redesigned it as an affordable option for consumers. With an MSRP of $399 (and likely even better street prices), it’s hard to beat.
