There are so many dry fire training tools. Historically, you could always use your actual firearm, which requires clearing and later reloading if it is a carry or duty gun. But striker-fired and single-action firearms lack a “resetting” trigger, preventing realistic follow-up shots.
Alternatives like the DryFireMag and Mantis exist. The “Cool Fire Trainer” is an expensive drop-in CO2 barrel for your actual firearm that requires refillable CO2 and generally won’t fit in your unmodified holster, if you choose to install the laser to track where your “shots” land.
For weapons retention and combatives, there are standard “Blue Gun” style trainers (which often feel like a generic hunk of plastic). Those trainers generally lack lasers and working triggers, and most either omit optics entirely or use a solid plastic block in the shape of a red dot. Some do not accept a weaponlight.

The Grip Keeper Laser Trainer enters the market as a middle-ground solution, specifically targeting shooters who want a dedicated training tool that matches the ergonomics and accessories of their specific everyday carry (EDC) or duty weapon.
What is the Grip Keeper Laser Trainer?
The Grip Keeper is a 3D-printed, trigger-activated laser training pistol. Unlike universal trainers like the SIRT—which primarily mimic Glocks or Smith & Wessons—Grip Keeper leverages 3D printing to offer over 25 different firearm models, including platforms like the Walther PDP, CZ P-10C, HK VP9, and Staccato/2011 variants.

key features
Model-Specific Frames: Designed to fit into your existing duty or concealed carry holsters.
Optic-Ready: Features mounting footprints (RMR, RMSC, MOS, etc.) so you can attach your actual red dot or order the magnetic base mounting footprint to swap optics quickly.
No Racking Required: The trigger resets automatically, allowing for rapid-fire strings, transitions, and “Bill Drills” without touching a slide.
Integrated Laser: Available in Red or Green, the laser provides instant visual feedback on shot placement.
Accessory Rails: Includes functional rails for mounting weapon lights like the Streamlight TLR-7 or SureFire X300.

Training Value: Benefits and Trade-offs
Draw-to-Shot Consistency: The Grip Keeper is designed for high-volume repetitions. Because it mimics the physical dimensions of your specific gun, it is exceptionally useful for consistent draw-to-shot practice from your actual duty or carry holster using the correct grip angle. This benefit extends to target transitions, enabling you to move between targets while maintaining a proper visual index throughout the string of fire.
Grip Isolation: While the trigger is “mushy” by design and lacks a crisp wall or break, this serves a specific training purpose. Many instructors argue that this lack of a distinct break actually forces the shooter to maintain a rock-solid grip to keep the laser steady throughout the entire pull.
Great for Combatives or Weapon Retention: Unlike a trainer with a non-functioning trigger, both the laser trainer and the standard model (no laser) have working triggers, which is great for combatives or weapon retention training. That is something that I always felt was annoying when training with legacy blue/red guns.
While the laser model is more expensive (especially the green laser), it is great for tracking shot placement during combatives – especially from retention and while moving.
Options Include: optic footprints, weapon-mounted light molded into the frame (or bare rail to attach a real light), laser color, frame color, and more.

The Trade-Offs
Trigger Realism: If you are looking for a trigger that feels exactly like a tuned 1911 or a striker-fired break, you won’t find it here. The trigger is a spring-loaded mechanism that provides consistent resistance (roughly 5 lbs) rather than a realistic break and reset.
Laser Alignment: Most models feature a fixed factory-aligned laser. While usually accurate out to 15 yards, it is not adjustable for windage and elevation like some higher-end systems. The magnetic optic attachment model does allow you to move the optic until the red dot aligns with the laser.
Build Material: Being 3D-printed from high-strength polymer, it is durable, but lacks the weight of a real, loaded firearm.

More than just a laser trainer
Beyond the laser units, the company offers specialized tools for various needs. This includes grip strength trainers available in:
- Just the Grip: No trigger, slide, or dust cover.
- Stubby: Includes a working trigger and trigger guard.
- Complete Pro: Full-size trainer that allows you to use the grip strength trainer, pick up a red dot, work a weapon light, work the trigger, and attach resistance bands.

Is it Right for You?
At a price point of approximately $70 to $250.00 (depending on the options you choose), the Grip Keeper is not cheap. At the time of this writing, they are offering a 5% off discount on their website.
If those same options are what you are looking for and are within your budget, then give the grip keeper a look. I definitely feel it is a nice upgrade from your standard “blue gun.”
