Viktos – Tactical Gear And Clothing For The Gray Man

Kenneth Stretz

Viktos is a veteran-designed tactical lifestyle brand launched in 2017 with the goal of bridging the gap between mission-ready performance and “gray man” urban aesthetics. While many tactical companies focus strictly on the battlefield, Viktos addresses the entire “black gun” lifestyle—from active duty and intensive training to R&R and everyday carry.

The Viktos Upscale 3 Leather Sling Bag

The Viktos Upscale 3 Leather Sling Bag is widely considered the “executive gray man” version of their popular EDC line. It transitions the tactical functionality of the original nylon Upscale into a more discreet, premium look. It is easily described as a premium, low-profile CCW solution that trades a bit of tactical “stretch” for a high-end look that blends into professional and social environments.

I am able to stow a full IFAK, spare pistol mag, spare flashlight/batteries, and a snack bar in the main compartment.

The standout feature in this bag is the premium leather. Unlike the Cordura versions, this brown leather looks right at home in a nice restaurant or at the office. It is really nice-looking. It is thick and durable, but starts a bit stiff. It requires a short “break-in” period.

The bag features high-quality YKK zippers with aluminum pulls. The most notable upgrade is the quick-release aluminum chest buckle, which is significantly more robust (and satisfying) than plastic alternatives. The only downside being it is easy to grab the sling at the buckle, separating the two halves when you first start using the bag. The interior lining is high-visibility and durable, making it easy to find small items in low light.

This is first and foremost a carry bag. The rear-most compartment is designed for a firearm and can be accessed from either side. It includes a universal hook-and-loop holster that fits up to a full-size pistol (though compacts like the Sig P365 or Glock 19 are the “sweet spot”). With practice, you can swing the bag to your chest and unzip the CCW compartment in one fluid motion.

I prefer on-body carry, so I use the bag as an “EDC support bag,” carrying a med kit, a spare magazine, a spare light/batteries, and snacks. As an alternative use for the holster compartment, it can be filled with a ballistic panel from Premier Body Armor—agreat option if you prefer on-body carry and use the bag for an IFAK and other supplies while attending religious services, going to the mall, a theatre or other high threat areas such as NYC.

For a “minimalist” bag (15″ H x 7″ W x 5″ D), it punches above its weight class. The main compartment includes elastic webbing and internal cargo pockets. It’s perfect for a “Stop the Bleed” kit, extra magazines, and a power bank, which is how I use it. The top padded pocket is excellent for eyewear, though some users find the leather flap a bit stiff to navigate when reaching for glasses quickly.

As previously mentioned, it is specifically designed to fit a Level IIIA soft armor insert (like those from Spartan Armor or Premier Body Armor), adding a layer of ballistic protection to your EDC.

Here, I’m using the Operatus XP gloves for range work to protect my hands.

The Viktos Operatus XP Glove

The Viktos Operatus XP is the “refined” successor to the original Operatus glove, specifically designed to address durability issues while maintaining the “second skin” dexterity that the line is known for. It is a purpose-built tactical glove that prioritizes firearms manipulation over brute-force hand protection.

Operatus XP gloves are designed to be so thin you don’t feel the need to take them off for fine-motor tasks like clearing malfunctions or loading magazines.

For trigger sensitivity, they have a one-piece AX Suede microfiber palm. Because there are no seams across the palm or at the primary trigger contact point, the “reset” and “wall” of your trigger remain very tactile. The four-way stretch mesh backhand keeps the glove tight to your hand, preventing the “bunching” often found in heavier gloves that can interfere with a high-tang grip.

A key feature for those with bigger hands who shoot compact or sub-compact pistols is the reinforced AX Suede thumb valley, which provides a layer of protection against slide bite without adding bulk.

Improvements Over the Original Operatus

If you used the first generation, you likely saw the seams blow out or the palm wear through quickly. The XP (Extra Performance) version addresses this:

Thicker Palm Material: While still thin, the microfiber is more abrasion-resistant.

Reinforced Fingers: The inner fingers are specifically reinforced to handle the “cheese-grater” effect of stippled trigger guards or aggressive frame textures.

Improved Wrist Closure: The TPR (thermoplastic rubber) hook-and-loop closure is more durable and less likely to fray at the edges compared to the old elastic binding.

Touchscreen Compatible: The trigger finger and thumb work reliably with smartphones and tablets.

Breathability: The mesh backhand is excellent for hot range days or high-intensity training. Frequently found around the $25.00 mark, making them very competitive with PIG FDT or Magpul gloves.

in addition to touch screen capability, the gloves provide excellent dexterity for trigger control.

Never Comin’ Back Again Duffel

the viktos Never Comin’ Back Again Duffel.

The Viktos Never Comin’ Back Again (NCBA) Duffel is the largest gear-hauler in the Viktos lineup. This bag is unapologetically designed for massive loadouts, extended deployments, and hauling “everything but the kitchen sink.”

It is likely the last duffel you’ll ever need for heavy logistics, provided you have the physical strength to carry 100 liters of gear when it’s fully loaded.

Capacity & dimensions are the most important things to understand about the NCBA.

Volume: 100 Liters. For context, this is roughly double the size of a standard “large” 3-day assault pack. Dimensions: 24.5″ H x 15″ W x 11″ D. It also features a massive wide-mouth opening. Unlike standard duffels with a straight zipper that makes you “tunnel” for gear, the NCBA opens up like a cargo hold, allowing you to see and access everything at once.

With a plate carrier, a battle belt, and an MRE, the bag is only 30% full.

Bomb-Proof Construction: The upper Chassis is made from 600D TPU-coated polyester. This material is highly water-resistant and has a rubberized feel that shrugs off mud, grit, and rain.

The bottom is reinforced with 900D ballistic nylon. This is critical because the base of a 100L bag takes a brutal amount of abrasion when dragged across gravel or concrete.

Zippers: It utilizes YKK Aquagard zippers with oversized aluminum T-handle pulls.

When a bag holds 100 liters, carrying it by a single shoulder strap is a recipe for back pain. Viktos addressed this with three modes:

Backpack Mode: It comes with integrated, padded shoulder straps and an adjustable sternum strap. This is the only realistic way to move this bag over any significant distance when full.

Snatch-and-Go: There are reinforced padded handles on all four sides. Whether it’s in the trunk of a cruiser or a luggage rack, you can grab it from any angle.

Lash Points: Integrated webbing allows you to strap the bag down to a roof rack or an ATV.

The duffel also features grab handles.

With its large capacity and water-resistant construction, this would be perfect for a bug-out bag pre-packed in your car, if you live in a suburban or rural environment, or stowed in your large city apartment. The NCBA bag is an excellent option for the prepared citizen.

The Viktos Counteract SBR bag.

Viktos Counteract SBR Bag

The Viktos Counteract SBR Bag is a purpose-built solution for the discreet transport of short-barreled rifles and large-format pistols. While many SBR bags still look like “tactical rifle cases with straps,” the Counteract is designed to pass as a standard, high-end travel or commuter pack. It offers the structural rigidity while maintaining a profile that doesn’t scream “rifle” in an urban environment.

The internal dimensions (26″ H x 12″ W x 9″ D) are optimized for the modern “truck gun” or PDW (Personal Defense Weapon).

Fully Assembled: It comfortably fits an AR-style SBR or pistol with up to a 12-inch barrel, including mounted optics and lights.

Disassembled: If you break the upper from the lower, it can accommodate barrels up to 16.5 inches.

It comes with three Hookie Lash straps that allow you to secure the firearm to the internal hook-and-loop wall, preventing the “clunking” sound of metal hitting metal while walking.

Viktos utilized their proprietary Tuff Hyde material for this bag, which is a coated 500D ripstop polyester. The material is non-reflective and lacks the “crinkle” sound found in some cheaper nylon bags. It is highly resistant to water, stains, and chemicals. Unlike standard Cordura, it doesn’t “soak up” mud or range grime; most dirt can be simply wiped off with a damp cloth.

The bag is reinforced so that even when loaded with a heavy SBR, several loaded mags, and a suppressor, it maintains its rectangular shape rather than sagging into a tell-tale “rifle shape.”

The bag follows a “clean outside, complex inside” philosophy. With dedicated magazine storage featuring specific internal pockets for four AR or AK-pattern magazines. The front compartments are large enough to house a full battle belt, chest rig, or your “eyes and ears.”

The Viktos Operatus CCW Jean should be your daily denim choice.

The Operatus CCW Jean is optimized for everyday carry. With a 9.5oz stretch denim chassis and no-pinch crotch gusset, these jeans are awesome to use on the range—going from standing to kneeling or prone and back up again.

They are designed to fit a little big to accommodate a concealed carry pistol. Combined with the stretch material, it made my normal size a little too big without a belt. So consider one size smaller than normal.

The stretch denim material is super comfortable and great for getting in and out of kneeling and prone positions on the range.

The front slash pockets provide quick access to the pistol magazine pocket incorporated into the front left and right pockets. The Pistol magazine pocket is one of my favorite features, as it securely holds a pistol magazine in place while leaving just enough room to reach in with your fingers and retrieve the magazine.

Unlike standalone pocket magazine holders that use a metal pocket clip, the integrated magazine pocket won’t damage your jeans

Front belt loops are positioned outboard for improved appendix carry options, while Apndx interior webbing allows for a concealed carry blade sheath to be secured and concealed inside the waistband.

The Operatus CCW jeans come with a one-year warranty and are the perfect choice for everyday use.

Relaxed fit, stretch denim, integrated pistol magazine pockets, and inside-the-waistband webbing, perfect for securing a blade and available in multiple colors. I have tried other CCW jeans from other manufacturers. They were ok, but the Viktos CCW Jean is my new everyday and range pant.

closing thoughts

Whether you are an armed professional who needs low-visibility options for weapons, communications, and other gear, or you are a prepared citizen who wants to be the “greyman,” you need to check out Viktos. You will be glad you did. You can thank me later!
