COMMON SAFARILAND ACRONYMS

The ALS is often called a thumb release or lever, and it sits to the inside of the body of the holster against the user. The system uses an internal locking mechanism that secures the gun in all directions simply upon re-holstering. To release the firearm from a positive lock, the operator must press the lever back. Once the device is released, the firearm can be drawn straight out of the holster with no twisting or other motion required. Additionally, holsters with this ergonomic design are completely operable with the thumb, and the straight up draw makes them very instinctive to use. On Duty Rated Holsters, the ALS provide Level 1 retention.

The CUBL (Cantable Universal Belt Loop) allows the user to choose the cant position on their holster based on their preference.

The DFA (Drop Flex Adapter) allows the user to wear a thigh rig below the hip without shifting the weight farther down the leg and keeps the rig from sliding on the belt.

The ELS (Equipment Locking System) provides a mounting platform for tactical or competition accessories to be placed in various locations, including belt clips, tactical rigs, or directly in MOLLE loops.

FDE (Flat Dark Earth) is a medium-dark, flat, earth-toned brown color used in many Safariland products.

The GLS is a unique security mechanism that requires the middle finger to release the firearm. With a proper shooting grip, the middle finger sits directly on the GLS lever. During the draw, the lever is depressed allowing for a smooth and easy straight up draw out of the holster. GLS holster models offer a low profile and compact design, perfect for concealability.

An IWB (Inside the Waistband) pouch or holster that is designed to fit comfortably and securely inside the waistband.

Olive Drab is a color often called just OD. It is the basic U.S. Army dark olive green that was also used by the other U.S. armed services.

MOLLE is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and backpacks used by several NATO armed forces.

A holster that goes on the outside of the waistband. Most commonly used by police and military, and by citizens who choose to open carry.

The MLS (MOLLE Locking System) is designed for quickly attaching and detaching a holster or firearm accessories to and from a MOLLE loop, whether it be on a vest or equipment carrier. Commonly used with the QLS (Quick Locking System) and ELS (Equipment Locking System).

The QLS (Quick Locking System) allows for quick transfer of gear between attachment points such as a belt loop, tactical leg shroud, or another stable platform.

The QUBL (QLS Universal Belt Loop) uses the QLS mounting platform to enable quick attachment and detachment of a holster.  It allows the user to easily raise and lower their holster from Low-ride, Mid-ride, or High-ride holster height positions without any tools.

The RDS (Red Dot Sight) is a sight for firearms that gives the user a point of aim in the form of an illuminated red dot. Safariland offers a range of RDS compatible holsters.

The SLS utilizes a rotating hood security mechanism, which provides greater protection against attempted firearm takeaways. To unlock the SLS security mechanism, the user first pushes the hood down, then rotates the hood forward to the unlocked position, which allows an opening to draw the firearm from the holster. On Duty Rated Holsters, the SLS provides Level II Retention.

The TMA (Tactical MOLLE Adapter) provides a holster or accessory with a quick, easy, and secure attachment to any MOLLE loop-equipped apparel.

The UFA (Universal Flex Adapter) allows the user to wear a thigh rig below the hip without shifting the weight farther down the leg and keeps the rig from sliding on the belt. The hole pattern at the top of the UFA allows for various belt mounts to be used (belt clip, paddle, etc.)

The VUBL (Vertical Universal Belt Loop) allows a user to comfortably position their holster to sit in a low-ride, mid-ride, or hi-ride holster height position.
