The Safariland Group Pioneers Fully Integrated System for Today’s Connected Officer

Proprietary CAS technology is fundamental component for wirelessly connecting devices to equipment, partners, command centers, and beyond

ONTARIO, California – Building upon the growing needs of today’s “connected officer,” The Safariland Group (“Safariland”), a leading global provider of safety and survivability products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets, today announced it is presenting the newest wireless CAS™ Auto-Activation technology at SHOT (Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade) Show, January 23-26 in Las Vegas. Safariland’s CAS technology interfaces with a variety of law enforcement tools including Safariland VIEVU® body-worn cameras, Motorola Solutions APX™ portable radios and the Digital Ally in-car video system.

CAS Auto-Activation technology incorporates proprietary market-leading chip technology embedded into the Safariland 7TS duty holster, in its wired and new wireless models. Now the CAS duty holster seamlessly pairs with several systems, such as cameras, radios and in-car video, allowing an officer in the field to wirelessly connect to different devices when the duty weapon is drawn. With CAS technology, an officer is reliably connected to other officers and the command center, allowing transmission of real-time information for them to support, monitor and respond immediately to issues in the field when a critical incident occurs.

“Safariland has established the industry standard for the next generation of policing technology,” said Terry O’Shea, chief technology officer for The Safariland Group. “We are the first and only company to design and manufacture an entire wearable system, coupling the right electronics and sensors, and integrating them into the duty gear we manufacture. Safariland oversees every product, every step of the way, ensuring its integrity and quality.”

Already interfacing with Safariland VIEVU cameras, heading into the 2018 SHOT Show Safariland VIEVU’s newest cutting edge LE5™ body-worn camera also leverages CAS technology, automatically activating the body-worn camera any time the weapon is drawn from the holster.

“The LE5 body-worn camera and CAS technology are pioneering the way law enforcement agencies integrate connectivity and technology into policing,” said Sean McCarthy, who leads the wearable technologies and VIEVU body-worn camera business for Safariland. “This forward-looking wearable technology reinforces our commitment to provide the most advanced solutions for law enforcement.”

In collaboration with Motorola Solutions, CAS technology is the conduit for connection to a Motorola Solutions radio or broadband device. Through its revolutionary design, the system detects when a firearm is away from the holster and will directly signal an officer’s Motorola Solutions APX™ portable radio or LEX L10 or LEX F10 broadband device, sending an alert through Motorola Solutions software to the command center.

“Through this alliance, real-time alerts provide mission-critical reliability to the thousands of agencies already using Motorola Solutions radios,” said McCarthy.

Safariland VIEVU’s partnership with Digital Ally® provides for implementation of a car based auto-activation system that initiates recording of VIEVU’s LE4 and LE5 body-worn cameras connected to CAS technology. Through an exclusive distribution agreement, Safariland VIEVU has access to the VuLink® car based auto-activation system, including its patented activation technology.

McCarthy added, “Exclusive distribution rights to Digital Ally’s patented VuLink technology allows integration with CAS technology and VIEVU to activate a body-worn camera at the most critical moments: when an officer exits a vehicle and when an officer draws a firearm from the Safariland CAS enabled duty holster.”

“With CAS technology we can deliver reliable connectivity in duty holsters worn by thousands of agencies worldwide. This is just the beginning for our wearable technology and we’re looking at a variety of other tools to protect the officer in the field,” added O’Shea. “Most importantly, we’re not engineering technology just for technology’s sake. We’re interested in saving lives. We’re looking for the best technology that’s going to help save lives in the field.”
