On May 7, 2023, Deputies were dispatched to a residence for a burglary in progress call. It appears the suspect wanted to ambush law enforcement. Deputies observed a possible suspect at the rear of the residence. Deputies gave commands but the suspect, who was armed with a shotgun, opened fire. The suspect fired two 12-gauge birdshot rounds and the fled the area. The deputies were both hit and were rushed to the hospital. The deputy’s Safariland SX02 Level IIIA armor stopped the shots to the torso areas. Both deputies were treated for wounds off the armor. The suspect was caught after a manhunt and has been charged with multiple felonies including several counts of attempted murder.
