On July 13, 2023, members of the Robeson County SWAT and investigators were executing a search warrant after a lengthy drug investigation. As Detective Kevin Chavis entered a bedroom in the residence, the assailant opened fire with a .45 ACP. Detective Chavis was struck on the left side of his armor. His Safariland SX Level IIIA armor stopped the round. Detective Chavis was able to return fire as other members of the team pulled him to cover. The assailant was arrested and is facing multiple felony charges. Detective Chavis has made a complete recovery and is back on full duty.
