On May 22, 2024, Members of the SWAT Team were serving a high-risk warrant. Officer Benjamin Cookson was providing coverage outside the bedroom window where the subject was believed to be. As the bedroom window was breached, the assailant opened fire with a 9mm, and Officer Cookson was hit in the lower abdomen and again on his rifle. His Protech® Shift 360™ with Safariland® Hardwire® .68 IIIA armor stopped the round to his lower abdomen. Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, and he was taken into custody. Officer Cookson has returned to full duty.
