On February 12, 2025, Officer Daniel Gonzales and his partner were dispatched to a call about a subject with a rifle who was walking through a residential area, firing into the air and buildings. As the officers arrived, a gunfight ensued. The assailant shot Officer Gonzales twice as both officers returned fire. Officer Gonzales’s partner returned fire and ended the threat. Officer Gonzales was hit in the chest and leg with .223 rounds.
Though the armor is not rated for rifle rounds, the doctors told Officer Gonzales that they believed his Safariland® XT03 level IIIA armor, worn in a Sacramento Carrier, took a lot of the energy out of the round as it passed through and allowed the medics to do initial field triage and gave them time to save his life. The wound to Officer Gonzales’s chest was not as severe as the one to his leg and doctor’s credit his Safariland® armor for making the difference. Officer Gonzales has successfully recovered and returned to full duty.
