On September 14, 2023, Officer Derek Williams witnessed a suspect commit a homicide. As the suspect fled the scene, Officer Williams and his partner pursued in their patrol vehicle. The assailant doubled back and as he passed, he opened fire with a .9mm handgun. Officer Williams was hit in the lower right abdominal area, but his Safariland SX02 Level IIIA armor stopped the round. The assailant was later located and taken into custody by Dallas SWAT.
Officer Williams was treated and released and has returned to full duty.
