On September 9, 2020, Officer Evan “Daniel” Myers responded to a single-vehicle traffic accident. Witnesses reported the vehicle had been traveling in excess of 100 mph before crashing and coming to rest on a mountainside in an unstable location. Officer Myers safely rescued the driver from the unstable vehicle and escorted him to the side of the highway. The driver was acting strange and walking onto the highway into traffic. Officer Myers placed him in his patrol vehicle for his own safety and advised him that he was not under arrest.
The tow truck arrived, and the operator needed the keys to the crashed vehicle. As Officer Myers opened the passenger door and went to retrieve them, the suspect jumped out and began to flee. Officer Myers gave chase, and as he caught up to the suspect, the man turned and began a vicious assault on Officer Myers. The struggle took place on the highway, with oncoming traffic from tractor-trailers. The assailant ripped off Officer Myer’s radio and microphone, then began pulling on his duty weapon with both hands to the point where he lifted Officer Myers complete bodyweight. Officer Myers’s Safariland® 7360-832 assisted in allowing Officer Myers to defeat the assault and attempted firearms take-away.
While Officer Myers continued to fight, he realized they were both in the path of an oncoming truck. As he tried to move himself and his assailant out of the path of the truck, the assailant stated that they were both going to get run over and attempted to lie prone on the highway. Officer Myers was successful in signaling the truck and moving them out of the way. At this point, Officer Myers was able to deploy his duty sidearm and take the assailant into custody. As Officer Myers had taken multiple injuries, including a dislocated thumb, he requested assistance from the tow driver, who was a retired Police Chief, to handcuff and secure the assailant.
The suspect faced multiple felony charges. Officer Myers has returned to full duty.
