Two hundred thirty “saves” ago another Illinois Central police officer took a 00 blast to Second Chance® vest. Almost eight years later a .38 slug was recovered from another ICG officer’s Model “Y” cotton cover – Joe Busse. Busse had just stepped out of his patrol unit to check out an area between the rail yard and an adjacent canal. He heard the shot but didn’t see where the flash came from as the slug ripped off the name tag on his right upper chest area, tore through his uniform shirt and came to an abrupt stop in his Second Chance® vest. Dr. Pagar, from Mercy Hospital, released Busse with a bruised shoulder and back but found no hemorrhaging or broken bones. Busse stated, “Nobody knew for sure if these vests worked before. Now we know. I think I’ll live with it.” Save #4, in “73, said the same thing!
We welcome Officer Joe Busse, SAVE #234, to The Safariland Group SAVES CLUB®.
