On November 11, 2020, Officer Zachary Barby was in a short pursuit attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted in a homicide. As the suspect’s vehicle stopped, the suspect opened fire on officers. Officer Barby moved to cover at the rear of a patrol vehicle when he felt a round strike his armor. He states this allowed him to identify where the suspect was, and he returned fire. The suspect was fatally wounded by officers in the shootout. Officer Barby’s Safariland® Xtreme® XT03 level II armor stopped the 9mm round that struck him and he was treated and released from the hospital. Officer Barby has returned to full duty.
