During Desert Storm, Sergeant Tillman was struck by schrapnel from the explosion of an anti-personnel device which detonated within a proximity of two meters. He received injuries to his neck, arms and head but he survived the blast. The vest he was wearing along with the vest of Cosmo Perrone who was also injured are preserved in the Special Forces Museum at Ft. Bragg, NC.
