On May 23, 1978, Officer William Meyers was called to a family disturbance. Meyers and his partner entered the home and found a man armed with a butcher knife and carving fork. While being distracted by a third officer, Meyers attempted to grab the suspect. During the struggle, the suspect lunged at Meyers, striking him in the chest, which was protected by his Second Chance® vest. The fork bent in a 90-degree angle with the vest.
