Officer Smith with his partner Clifton Dean were attempting to arrest a rape suspect. During the arrest, the officers thought the suspect was hitting the officer but he was actually stabbing the officer. The officers were able to get control of the suspect’s left hand but he then he pulled a second knife from his boot with his right hand and continued stabbing the officers. Officer Dean was stabbed four times and Officer Smith was stabbed two times. Officer Dean’s vest had six puncture marks and Officer Smith’s had two. Their vests prevented them from receiving serious injury to any vital organs
