Officer Hernandez was involved in a foot chase in the early morning hours of July 2, 2000. As he rounded a corner, he ran face to face into the suspect who was holding a S&W 357 magnum. Officer Hernandez instinctively grabbed the suspect’s gun with his hands. The suspect hit him through his hands hitting him directly in the chest at very close range. The weapon used was a stolen, scopesighted, S&W model 686, 357 magnum. It was loaded with CCI Blazer, lead unjacketed .38 rounds. Officer Hernandez was able to fight back and survive as a result of his wearing his body armor.
