Deputy Newman responsded to a trespassing call where a man had seen a vehicle drive into a wooded area behind his house. Deputy Newman along with another officer went to the scene where they found a truck parked and noticed a man standing in the woods nearby. Both deputies got out of their cars and as Deputy Newman reached the front of his car, the man in the woods opened fire. Deputy Newman was hit with a total of 40 pellets in the face, hands, arms and left shoulder. His vest absorbed another 80 pellets.
