Special Agent Maurer was shot during an altercation with a convicted felon reputed to be a member of a white supremist group and who was suspected of illegal weapon possession and sale. The suspect first shot another officer in the leg knocking the officer to the ground and while standing over the officer, the suspect shot him again in the neck. SA Maurer ran to the aid of the fallen officer encountering the suspect and in a gunfire exchange, SA Maurer was shot twice in the chest.
